The paper traces the work Western Attitudes toward Death: from the Middle Ages to the present by Philippe Ariès, a french medievalist historian. In particular, it examines the different attitudes, which he identifies, towards death from the Middle Ages until the second half of the 20th century. This thesis aims to compare the view of a domesticated, familiar and normal death, typical of ancient times, which then over the centuries is transformed until it becomes a real taboo from the 1950s onward. The figure of death today is changing again, and some new representations of it, such as Neil Gaiman's portrayal of it in one of his most famous works, Sandman, bear witness to this.

Abstract
The paper traces the work Western Attitudes toward Death: from the Middle Ages to the present by Philippe Ariès, a french medievalist historian. In particular, it examines the different attitudes, which he identifies, towards death from the Middle Ages until the second half of the 20th century. This thesis aims to compare the view of a domesticated, familiar and normal death, typical of ancient times, which then over the centuries is transformed until it becomes a real taboo from the 1950s onward. The figure of death today is changing again, and some new representations of it, such as Neil Gaiman's portrayal of it in one of his most famous works, Sandman, bear witness to this.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
