Land Surface Temperature (LST) is a fundamental variable for climate change studies, in particular extreme events such as heat waves. On an urban scale, this variable is widely used to study the phenomenon of urban heat islands (UHI). The analysis of LST variable proposed by this study focuses on Salento’s territories in Southern Italy during a heat wave and it highlights a completely anomalous behavior, not coherent with the microclimatic urban heat islands phenomenon. The analysed urban areas appear to be characterised by a lower temperature than the surrounding poorly vegetated rural areas. The purpose of the study is to understand which factors contribute to this anomaly and demonstrate the possible existence of a correlation between temperature, land use, vegetation index (NDVI) and surface albedo through statistical analysis of Landsat 8 satellite images processed by a GIS software.
