The food delivery sector has spread exponentially thanks to technological innovation and the Covid-19 pandemic. On the one hand, the work of the rider is characterised by flexibility, allowing workers to choose autonomously when and how much to work; on the other hand, algorithmic management tools do not always make this freedom of choice at work easy. The research aims to investigate the working conditions of riders and the repercussions of this work on their private life in terms of time spent with family, friends and the community, through a qualitative research consisting of ten semi-structured interviews. The object of research are riders, who are engaged in the food delivery sector, in the city of Ferrara. The first part of the research focuses on the working conditions of riders, the purpose of this chapter is to investigate the reasons for this work choice, how a working day is carried out, the difficulties encountered and the current working conditions. The second part of the research aims to investigate the relationship between the work and private sphere and how it is managed.

Abstract

The uncertain boundary between work time and life time: a qualitative analysis of the rider in the food delivery sector
