Since globalization has taken place, civil society actors and various social movements have emerged as one of the central players on the world stage. Their engagement opens opportunities for the protection of human rights, and as acknowledged by the European Union, these actors are essential for upholding the Union’s founding values as enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union. While migration is seen as a challenge to nation-states with its variety of types and growing volume, civil society organizations have become increasingly important in supporting migrants by raising awareness, improving access to basic services, advocating for their rights and strengthening social inclusion. Accordingly, it is necessary to continuously evaluate the extent and significance of their role in politics as their visibility and influence increase. Consequently, the present thesis will focus on migration as a growing controversial phenomenon in Europe, especially following the outbreak of the Arab Spring in 2011 and the migration crisis in 2015. In addition, although the existing literature on the topic, suggests that civil society organizations are provided with only limited resources that restrain their mandate, this paper is devoted to undertaking research for a better understanding of their role in the EU’s policy response to the mass influx of migrants, while reflecting upon the EU-Mediterranean partnership, as well.

Abstract
In addition, although the existing literature on the topic, suggests that civil society organizations are provided with only limited resources that restrain their mandate, this paper is devoted to undertaking research for a better understanding of their role in the EU’s policy response to the mass influx of migrants, while reflecting upon the EU-Mediterranean partnership, as well.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
