This dissertation is about localization in the field of video games and the issues related to it. With the spread of video games in the late ’70, the digital entertainment industry had to invest in localization in order to help these new products find their way in the world. Localization is not just a simple translation: it’s a practice that allows to adapt a product to the culture of a language it’s translated to, even at the risk of changing or cutting out some elements of that product. This practice surely helps a video game to become internationalized and successful, but how far can it go in changing it’s assets without undermining the originality of the product? The aim of this dissertation is to analyze this risk while taking into consideration a case study.
