The complexity and variety of symptoms linked to traumatic experiences has made new research necessary to fully understand the mechanisms by which a traumatic experience can impact the individual on a psychological and physical level. New research and new conceptualizations, such as the polyvagal theory, help to understand not only the pathology but also a possible way of recovery. To understand what happens following a trauma, it is necessary to study what happens in the autonomic nervous system, to which feelings of danger, stress and safety are linked. Yoga, thanks to physical exercises, respiratory practices, and meditation practices, can be a valid complementary therapy to modify the mechanisms that keep the individual anchored to the suffering of the trauma. In particular, Yoga style specifically designed for the treatment of trauma, Trauma Sensitive Yoga, can help the individual develop proprioception, interoception, the ability to make a decision and the courage to act coherently.
La complessità e la varietà della sintomatologia legata ad esperienze traumatiche ha reso necessarie nuove ricerche per comprendere a pieno i meccanismi per cui un'esperienza traumatica può impattare l'individuo a livello psicologico e corporeo. Nuove ricerche e nuove concettualizzazioni, come la teoria polivagale, aiutano a comprendere non solo la patologia ma anche una possibile via di guarigione. Per comprendere cosa avviene a seguito di un trauma, è necessario studiare cosa avviene nel sistema nervoso autonomo, a cui sono legate le sensazioni di pericolo, stress e sicurezza. Lo Yoga, grazie agli esercizi fisici, alle pratiche respiratorie, e alle pratiche di meditazione, può essere una valida terapia complementare per modificare i meccanismi che mantengono l'individuo ancorato alla sofferenza del trauma. In particolare, uno stile di Yoga pensato appositamente per il trattamento del trauma, il Trauma Sensitive Yoga, può aiutare l'individuo a sviluppare la propriocezione, l'interocezione, la capacità di prendere una decisione e il coraggio di agire coerentemente.
