This thesis analyzes the role of Fiat as an international actor during the Second World War in the years 1970s and 1980s. During this historical period, Fiat has emerged as one of the main automotive Italian businesses and has had a significant role in political economy and industrial diplomacy. During the Cold War, the ideological and economic conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union led to a division of the world into two blocks, with Italy located in the western block led by the USA. In this framework, Fiat has attempted to position itself as an international actor, by capitalizing on the opportunities and by navigating the challenges faced by the confrontation of the two superpowers. Fiat has adopted a strategy of global expansion, attempting to grow its presence in the international markets. This has led to the opening of new production sites and the founding of joint ventures with other firms in the automotive industry all over the world. Fiat has to navigate skillfully among these tensions, attempting to balance the economic needs and the political pressure. Moreover, Fiat had to face the political implications of its international operations. In some cases, the firm has been accused of collaborating with authoritarian regimes and exploiting workers in the countries it operated. Notwithstanding these challenges, Fiat was successful in consolidating its position as an international actor during the Cold War. Its global presence has contributed to Italian economic growth and has had a significant role in the field of industrial diplomacy. Fiat has been able to navigate the complex political and economic dynamics of that time, facing all the challenges and capitalizing on the opportunities offered in the context of the Cold War.
