DALLA RUSSIA DEGLI ZAR ALLA DESTALINIZZAZIONE

The subject of my final thesis concern the main stages of Russia’s development from the early 19th century to 1964, or rather from the late tsarist period to the presidency of N.S. Chruščëv. The analysis focuses on the major political and economic aspects of each era, with particular attention given, in the final chapter, to the period so-called destalinization (1953-1964), a decade characterized by unusual events in the history of this country. Through the work I have produced, I have attempted to closely observe the most significant changes that the country has undergone over the years, with the stated objective, as declared in the introduction, to answer three key questions regarding the sustainability of the economic-financial system of this Eurasian region – the main critical issues have been identified during the course of the study –, the historical significance of destalinization, and the impact that the implemented reforms had on institutions, economic system, lives of the population, and, more generally, on the chronic issues that historically afflicting this territorial entity. From the historical analysis of the tsarist, revolutionary, and post-revolutionary eras, I tried to propose in the end a conclusion to the foundamental question of whether the destalinization phase inaugurated a new course for the Soviet Union or if it was simply an atypical period in the history of this state, after which it returned to its traditional autocratic and heavily repressive path that has always characterized it.

L’argomento della mia prova finale riguarda le tappe salienti dello sviluppo della Russia dai primi dell’800 al 1964, ovvero dal tardo zarismo alla presidenza di N.S. Chruščëv. L’analisi si focalizza sui principali aspetti politici ed economici delle varie epoche per porre particolare attenzione, nell’ultimo capitolo, al periodo della c.d. destalinizzazione (1953-1964), un decennio caratterizzato da eventi alquanto insoliti per la storia di questo paese. Attraverso l’elaborato da me prodotto, ho cercato di osservare nel dettaglio i mutamenti più salienti da cui il paese è stato investito nel corso degli anni, con l’obiettivo, dichiarato fin dall’introduzione, di rispondere ad un triplice quesito circa la sostenibilità del sistema economico-finanziario di questa regione eurasiatica – di cui sono state individuate le principali criticità durante lo svolgimento dell’elaborato –, il significato storico della destalinizzazione e l’impatto effettivo che le riforme in essa attuate ebbero sulle istituzioni, sul sistema economico, sulla vita della popolazione e più in generale sulle croniche problematiche da cui è stata storicamente afflitta questa entità territoriale. Dall’analisi storica delle epoche zarista, rivoluzionaria e post-rivoluzionaria ho potuto in conclusione proporre una risposta alla questione fondamentale, ovvero se la fase della destalinizzazione abbia inaugurato un nuovo corso per l’Unione Sovietica o se si è semplicemente trattato di un arco temporale atipico nel portato storico di questo Stato, terminato il quale esso è rientrato nel tradizionale solco autocratico e fortemente repressivo da cui è sempre stato permeato.
