This thesis focuses on analyzing the crisis and survival of democracy in the Asia-Pacific region, which, according to the V-Dem (Varieties of Democracy) Research Institute's Democracy Report 2022, is a region where most of the population lives under closed autocratic regimes. The report shows how the obvious waves of autocratization are increasingly penetrating and spreading to other countries, also sensing a change in its nature from the past. The thesis will focus on identifying the influences of factors and conditions involving politics, economics and culture on democracies in Asia and how these may affect their resilience or regression. The thesis will examine the two empirical cases of South Korea and the Philippines in order to understand the challenges and opportunities for the survival of democracy in this region. In addition, the thesis will analyze the elements that favor the emergence of autocratic leaders in Asia by examining examples of autocratic leadership that have manifested in the recent history of these countries. At the end of the research, and following comparisons between the two empirical cases, it will be possible to understand how a country's background is a key component in the stability, strengthening and preservation of a democracy.

Abstract
At the end of the research, and following comparisons between the two empirical cases, it will be possible to understand how a country's background is a key component in the stability, strengthening and preservation of a democracy.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
