Il carcere come strumento di rieducazione: realtà o utopia?

Prison and its purposes have acquired different nuances over time: from a vision more linked to punishment, we have now moved on to prison as a place of re-education. The aim of this paper is to make a historical excursus of the various meanings that prison has had, up to the current concept of prison as a place of re-education, and of punishment no longer understood only as a punishment, but as a point starting point for the rehabilitation of the prisoner and his reintegration into society. The figure of the penitentiary educator will also be explored, and various interventions and re-educational treatments will be analyzed through which this figure can support the prisoner, inside the prison, in his path of reintegration once his sentence has been served. These interventions aim in particular at the re-education with respect to the responsibilities, duties and obligations that derive from having a job, the importance of study, affection, the closeness of one's loved ones and social relationships, the need to feel like parents also inside the walls, up to faith and the need to entrust oneself to someone or something greater. To deepen the theme and try to understand whether re-education in prison can be a reality or a utopia, whether it can really happen or whether it is only a mere hope, we finally come to the analysis of a case study thanks to which it is possible to identify the underlying causes that drive individuals to perform certain actions, and the feelings that lead them to improve themselves and become better people.

Il carcere e le sue finalità hanno acquisito nel tempo diverse sfumature: da una visione più legata alla pena, si è passati oggi al carcere come luogo di ri-educazione. Obiettivo del presente elaborato è quello di fare un excursus storico delle varie accezioni che ha avuto il carcere, fino ad arrivare all’attuale concetto di carcere come luogo di ri-educazione, e della pena intesa non più solo come una punizione, ma come punto di partenza per la riabilitazione del detenuto ed il suo reinserimento nella società. Verrà inoltre approfondita la figura dell’educatore penitenziario, e analizzati vari interventi e trattamenti ri-educativi attraverso i quali questa figura può supportare il detenuto, all’interno del carcere, nel suo percorso di reinserimento una volta scontata la pena. Tali interventi mirano in particolare alla ri-educazione rispetto alla responsabilità, doveri ed obblighi che derivano dall’avere un lavoro, all’importanza dello studio, dell’affettività, della vicinanza dei propri cari e delle relazioni sociali, al bisogno di sentirsi genitori anche dentro alle mura, fino alla fede e alla necessità di affidarsi a qualcuno o a qualcosa di più grande. Per approfondire il tema e cercare di capire se la ri-educazione in carcere possa essere realtà o utopia, se possa avvenire realmente o se sia solo mera speranza, si giunge, infine, all’analisi di un caso studio grazie al quale è possibile individuare le cause sottostanti che spingono gli individui a compiere determinate azioni, e i sentimenti che li inducono a migliorare se stessi e a diventare persone migliori.
