THEATER and PSYCHOLOGY: The main therapeutic approaches and the example of "the pathological theater"

. This thesis aims to give an overview as clear and comprehensive as possible of the complex and little-known world that arises from the union of theatre and therapy. After presenting the many points of contact between theatre and psychology, the concept of dramatic reality, which underlies all theatre-based therapies, is explored, and the focus is placed on showing the therapeutic potential of theatre. The second section presents psychodrama and drama therapy, which are the two main therapeutic approaches using theatre. These are compared in terms of theory, practice, function of the therapist and target population. The state of research in this area is taken stock of both present reviews and meta analyses, assesment methods and tools, and recommendations for future research are given. The third section deals with theatre of the oppressed and playback theatre, which are approaches that use theatre for the empowerment of individuals and for community outreach. In the fourth section it is reported the example of pathological theatre, which is an Italian reality that works with mentally and physically disabled people through theatre, and which has gained international recognition at both artistic and therapeutic levels. Finally, this thesis can be understood as a starting point for future experimental research that could be developed within the reality of the pathological theatre.

Questa tesi si propone di fornire una panoramica il più possibile chiara ed esaustiva del complesso e poco conosciuto mondo che nasce dall'unione di teatro e terapia. Dopo aver presentato i numerosi punti di contatto tra teatro e psicologia, viene esplorato il concetto di realtà drammatica, che è alla base di tutte le terapie basate sul teatro, e ci si concentra sulla dimostrazione del potenziale terapeutico del teatro. La seconda sezione presenta lo psicodramma e la teatroterapia, che sono i due principali approcci terapeutici che utilizzano il teatro. Questi vengono confrontati in termini di teoria, pratica, funzione del terapeuta e popolazione di riferimento. Viene fatto il punto sullo stato della ricerca in quest'area, sia con rassegne attuali che con meta-analisi, sui metodi e sugli strumenti di valutazione e vengono fornite raccomandazioni per la ricerca futura. La terza sezione tratta del teatro dell'oppresso e del playback theatre, approcci che utilizzano il teatro per l'empowerment degli individui e per la sensibilizzazione delle comunità. Nella quarta sezione viene riportato l'esempio del teatro patologico, una realtà italiana che lavora con persone mentalmente e fisicamente disabili attraverso il teatro e che ha ottenuto un riconoscimento internazionale sia a livello artistico che terapeutico. Infine, questa tesi può essere intesa come un punto di partenza per future ricerche sperimentali che potrebbero essere sviluppate all'interno della realtà del teatro patologico.
