Many species of cockroaches are social insects, in which the formation of stable groups with defined hierarchies among individuals is established. Sociality is a very important aspect of the ecology of these animals, and in fact it has been studied in several species, but there are still many aspects to be clarified. The objective of this thesis was to study social behavior during small group formation in the Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa). In particular, dominance behavior and the establishment of new hierarchies between individuals that had not had previous interactions were studied. It was also assessed whether certain aspects of social behavior were related to the sex or some morphological characteristic (including body size) of the individuals. Finally, being a crepuscular species, the degree of activity between the daytime and nighttime phases of the photoperiod was compared. This preliminary study will help to understand how and how quickly social hierarchies are established in this species.

Abstract
This preliminary study will help to understand how and how quickly social hierarchies are established in this species.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
