First of all, this work sets out to analyse the increase in the phenomenon of marital breakdowns over the years. In order to do so, it presents the context concerning Italian families, describing their formation and structure, as well as explaining the changes in the way families are made since the 1970s. Subsequently, as a second objective, the aim is to assess the extent to which legislative changes have influenced the way couples are dissolved. To this end, the legislative changes of 1987 and 2014-2015 are presented. These are first compared in terms of their effects in the divorce and separation series, and then their effects are empirically assessed through analyses of marriage separations by marriage cohort. This data-processing technique is often used by demographers and requires the creation of tables, which are given in the Appendix. The methodology explained in the paper allows various analyses, among which are the elaborations by separation probability and surviving marriages. The latter provide a concise understanding of the stability of marriages. With regard to the probability of separation, the analysis focused on the elaboration by marriage cohort, while a comparison was subsequently made also with the probability of separation by period. This makes it possible to have available the complete series of separation probabilities up to the last available survey year. All data concerning Italy are obtained from the National Institute of Statistics (Istat) and the period considered varies between 1969 and 2018. Finally, a comparison with a foreign country, specifically France, is presented. This comparison makes it possible to assess the Italian situation through a different context, drawing a parallel of the Italian position with respect to other European countries, of which France is the example. The data used for France were obtained from the National Institute for Demographic Studies (INED).

Abstract
First of all, this work sets out to analyse the increase in the phenomenon of marital breakdowns over the years. In order to do so, it presents the context concerning Italian families, describing their formation and structure, as well as explaining the changes in the way families are made since the 1970s. Subsequently, as a second objective, the aim is to assess the extent to which legislative changes have influenced the way couples are dissolved.
