CONSERVAZIONE E RIATTIVAZIONE DI UN ELABORATORE ELETTRONICO: IL PDP-11 DEL CENTRO DI SONOLOGIA COMPUTAZIONALE

The progressive evolution of technology has significantly and rapidly changed the software storaging devices. Magnetic carriers (floppy disks) were the most common in the computers from the eighties. Nowadays it is not possible anymore to rely on their ability to store data, so a preservation process is necessary, together with the firmware contained in the original computer. In this way it will be possible to emulate the system, avoiding computers, which contribution has been essential for computer science and music history (CSC's PDP-11), to be forgotten, causing the impossibility of a thoroughly study of the musical works that were made with these devices.

Il continuo evolversi della tecnologia ha modificato in modo importante e rapido i supporti di memorizzazione del software. I supporti di tipo magnetico (floppy disk) furono quelli maggiormente diffusi nei calcolatori anni 80. Oggi non è più possibile fare affidamento sulla loro capacità di memorizzazione e diventa necessaria un'operazione di conservazione degli stessi, unitamente al firmware contenuto nel calcolatore originale. In questo modo si potrà poi procedere al recupero dei dati e all'emulazione del sistema, al fine di evitare che computer il cui contributo alla storia dell'informatica e della musica (PDP-11 del CSC) è stato rilevante, vengano dimenticati, causando l'impossibilità di studiare a fondo le opere musicali che sono state realizzate con questi elaboratori.
