Eating disorders are complicated disorders characterised by dysfunctional eating behaviour, excessive preoccupation with weight and altered body image perception. According to the transdiagnostic cognitive behavioural theory of eating disorders, excessive preoccupation with weight, body shape and eating control is the specific and central psychopathology of eating disorders (ED). Body Image Disorder is characterised as a transversal symptom of the different ED diagnoses. In this paper we have explored this component by investigating the effects of specific body image treatment in patients who have received a diagnosis of ED and were in residential setting. Among the effects investigated: body discomfort, eating disorder psychopathology, body image flexibility and interoceptive awareness. The group uses mirror exposure (ME) as its main clinical tool. The additional body image treatment proved to be effective in reducing body image inflexibility, measured by Body Image - Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (BI-AAQ), while only partially impacting interoceptive awareness, measured by Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA).
Il gruppo utilizza l’esposizione allo specchio (ME) come strumento clinico principale. Il trattamento addizionale per l’immagine corporea si è dimostrato efficace nel ridurre l’inflessibilità dell’immagine corporea, misurata tramite Body Image – Acceptance and Action Questionnaire (BI-AAQ), mentre agisce solamente in parte sulla consapevolezza interocezionale, misurata tramite Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA).
