Violence and Identity in Indian Killer by Sherman Alexie

In this thesis, I’m going to discuss and analyse the book Indian Killer, a murder mystery novel, written in 1997 by the Native American writer Sherman Alexie. Before focusing on the work, in the first chapter, it will be fundamental to provide a brief overview of the historical events, of culture and especially of Native American literature. Literature has been a powerful instrument for Native Americans to pass on their identity, their traditions and their history. In the following chapter, I’m going to talk about the life and works of Sherman Alexie. A crucial point is the link between Alexie’s works and historical memory. This last is important for Alexie: his works are rich in references to the history of numerous Indigenous nations and their clashes with colonizers. There are many historical references also in Indian Killer. In the third chapter, the plot of the novel and an in-depth analysis of it will follow. Alexie, a Spokane Native himself, has a deep knowledge of indigenous identity and, in his book, he focuses in particular on urbanized Natives who live in a condition of suffering and anger. There are numerous scenes of cruelty and extreme violence, a mutual hatred between Natives and whites, aiming to represent a long history of conflicts. Alexie gives an interesting insight on the current Native American social and cultural condition, showing a wide range of possible interactions. In the fourth and last chapter, there will be a reflection on Sherman Alexie’s vision on the possibility of achieving reconciliation and integration, without renouncing one's own identity.

In questa tesi, si discuterà e analizzerà il libro Indian Killer, un romanzo thriller scritto nel 1997 dallo scrittore nativo americano Sherman Alexie. Prima di concentrarsi sull’opera, nel primo capitolo, sarà fondamentale fare un breve resoconto degli eventi storici, della cultura e soprattutto della letteratura dei nativi americani. La letteratura è stata un potente strumento per i nativi americani per trasmettere la loro identità, le loro tradizioni e la loro storia. Nel capitolo seguente, parlerò della vita e delle opere di Sherman Alexie. Un elemento cruciale è il legame tra le opere di Alexie e la memoria storica. Quest’ultima è importante per Alexie: le sue opere sono ricche di riferimenti alla storia di numerose nazioni indigene e ai loro scontri con i colonizzatori. Ci sono molti riferimenti storici anche in Indian Killer. Nel terzo capitolo, seguiranno la trama del romanzo e una sua analisi approfondita. Alexie, lui stesso un nativo Spokane, ha una conoscenza profonda dell’identità indigena e, nel suo libro, si concentra in particolare sugli indiani urbanizzati che vivono in una condizione di sofferenza e rabbia. Numerose sono le scene di crudeltà e violenza estrema, un odio reciproco tra nativi e bianchi volto a rappresentare una lunga storia carica di conflitti. Alexie offre uno spaccato interessante sull’attuale condizione sociale e culturale dei nativi americani, mostrando una vasta gamma di interazioni possibili. Infine, nel quarto e ultimo capitolo, si rifletterà sulla visione di Sherman Alexie circa la possibilità di raggiungere la riconciliazione e l’integrazione, senza dover rinunciare alla propria identità.
