Viaggio nella picaresca: confronto tra la Spagna de "El Lazarillo de Tormes" e l'Inghilterra de "Le avventure di Oliver Twist"

This thesis aims to analyze two fundamental picaresque works: the “Lazarillo de Tormes”, by anonymous author, and “Oliver Twist”, by Charles Dickens. The opening chapter focuses on the general and common characteristics of the picaresque novel, which takes its name from the term picaro, meaning "cunning trickster". It continues by examining in more detail the individual novels, starting in the second chapter with the Spain of the Lazarillo de Tormes, where the exhausting path of growth of the protagonist is explored, and continuing in the next one with the England of Oliver Twist, taking a look at Oliver’s ailing childhood. In the fourth chapter there is the comparison of the two, where the similarities and differences are investigated. The thesis ends with the illustration in the art of the two protagonists of the works considered and with interpretations by authors on the morality of the same. The purpose of this thesis work is to show the closeness of novels apparently distant from each other, because they belong to different countries and authors, but united by themes that resurface.

Questa tesi si pone l’obiettivo di analizzare due opere fondamentali della picaresca: il “Lazarillo de Tormes”, di autore anonimo, e “Oliver Twist”, di Charles Dickens. Nel capitolo iniziale si pone il focus sulle caratteristiche generali e comuni del romanzo picaresco, che prende il nome dal termine picaro, ovvero “imbroglione astuto”. Si prosegue poi esaminando più dettagliatamente i singoli romanzi, partendo nel secondo capitolo con la Spagna del Lazarillo de Tormes, dove si esplora l’estenuante percorso di crescita del protagonista, e in quello successivo con l’Inghilterra di Oliver Twist, dando uno sguardo all’infanzia sofferente di Oliver. Nel quarto capitolo si arriva alla comparazione dei due, dove si indaga quindi sulle somiglianze e differenze presenti. La tesi si conclude con l’illustrazione nell’arte dei due protagonisti delle opere prese in considerazione e con interpretazioni di autori sulla morale delle stesse. Con il presente lavoro di tesi si vuole dunque mostrare la vicinanza di opere apparentemente lontane tra loro, poiché appartenenti a Paesi e autori diversi, ma accomunate da temi che riaffiorano.
