"Viking funeral rites and the burials of Balder and Beowulf in literature" wants to analyse Viking funerals by examining their finds, funeral methods and traditions. The thesis work focuses on the deepening of the uses and customs in the Viking world of funeral ceremonies by studying the archaeological finds, the received literature and related mythology. The following will therefore be explored: the funeral ceremonies, the otherworldly world together with the mythological beliefs and the funerals of two important characters: Balder and Beowulf. The texts of Portner, Jones, Chiesa Isnardi and also other authors, as well as important works such as the Prose Edda, the Poetic Edda and Beowulf will be consulted, in order to have a detailed and complete description of the topics seen. You will be able to discover a part of Norse mythology through the analysis of one of the main deities, Odin, his role in the world of the dead and his involvement in the final battle, the Ragnarǫk.

Il lavoro di tesi si concentra sull’ approfondimento degli usi e costumi nel mondo vichingo delle cerimonie funebri studiando i rinvenimenti archeologici, la letteratura pervenuta e la mitologia affine. Verranno dunque approfondite: le cerimonie funeree, il mondo ultraterreno insieme alle credenze mitologiche ed i funerali di due personaggi importanti: Balder e Beowulf. Saranno consultati i testi di Portner, Jones, Chiesa Isnardi ed anche altri autori, oltre alle importanti opere come l’Edda in prosa, l’Edda poetica e Beowulf in modo da avere una descrizione dettagliata e completa delle tematiche affrontate. Si avrà modo di scoprire una parte della mitologia norrena attraverso l’analisi di una delle divinità principali, Odino, del suo ruolo nel mondo dei morti ed il suo coinvolgimento nella battaglia finale, il Ragnarǫk
