Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary, a famous novel published in 1856, is considered the greatest masterpiece of the realist literary current, which was established in France from the 19th century onwards. Ordinary scenes depicting reality were the focus of scrupulous and in-depth research by the writer himself. This thesis aims to compare the famous realist novel with the film renditions used by director Sophie Barthes in 2014. Two authors, two plots, two points of view of the main protagonist, Emma Bovary. The proposed literary analysis aims to explain, from a narrative and stylistic point of view, the various events that influence the protagonist's life. In contrast, the film analysis will address the different methods used in adapting the vast plot, converted from the novel to the film itself. Interviews given by the director will be a point of reference to understand the different choices used in the filmmaking. A film that not only tries to simplify the plot of the novel, but also tries to focus all the important aspects on a unique point of view, that of Emma Bovary.
Madame Bovary de Gustave Flaubert, célèbre roman publié en 1856, est considéré le plus grand chef-d'œuvre du courant littéraire réaliste, qui s'est installé en France à partir du XIXe siècle. Des scènes ordinaires décrivant la réalité seront l'objet d'une recherche scrupuleuse et détaillée du même écrivain. Cette thèse vise à comparer le célèbre roman réaliste avec les interprétations cinématographiques utilisées par la réalisatrice Sophie Barthes en 2014. Deux auteurs, deux intrigues, deux points de vue sur la protagoniste principale, Emma Bovary. L'analyse littéraire proposée vise à expliquer, d'un point de vue narratif et stylistique, les différents événements qui influencent la vie de la protagoniste. En revanche, l'analyse filmique abordera les différentes méthodes utilisées pour adapter la vaste intrigue du roman au film. Les interviews données par la réalisatrice, Sophie Barthes, seront de référence pour comprendre les différents choix utilisés dans la réalisation du film. Un film qui tente de simplifier l'intrigue du roman et qui cherche de concentrer tous les aspects importants sur un point de vue unique, celle d'Emma Bovary.
