The geographical space that during the twentieth century would be still called Galicia should not be described as an historical region limited to West Ukraine and South Poland only, but also as a starting point in which literary masterpieces and socio-political ideals were forged and cherished. The current dissertation refers to a multilingual, nowadays vanished reality which was part of the Habsburg Monarchy domain, and in which, starting from the 19th century onwards, numerous cultures met one another and intermingled together. The cultural product which eventually stemmed from this particular and European-only encounter played an important role in the literary production of Galician writer and reporter Joseph Roth. As a journalist, he traveled to Galicia in 1924 and wrote on behalf of the Frankfurt’s Newspaper three splendid articles in which he reported on a half-destroyed but still living land. The present work firstly aims to analyze through literary lens the three articles from Joseph Roth that appeared in 1924, and secondly it conducts an historical and cultural research of 1914 - 1924 Galicia. Said decade was chosen in order to include in the dissertation those crucial years encompassing the First World War and the Polish Republic administration over the region, which in my opinion were decisive not only for the writer, but also for the upcoming historical development of Ukrainian, Polish and Austrian dynamics. This was also, from my point of view, the only manner in which the present study could be effectively conducted, thus not only by considering the most confusing years which Galicia faced during the first half of the 20th century, but also by telling Joseph Roth’s opinions, fears and love towards his home region.

Abstract
This was also, from my point of view, the only manner in which the present study could be effectively conducted, thus not only by considering the most confusing years which Galicia faced during the first half of the 20th century, but also by telling Joseph Roth’s opinions, fears and love towards his home region.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
