The subject of this study is Wolfgang Beltracchi; a German artist who has become famous for being the mastermind behind the most striking falsification of the 21st century. Accused of several crimes of forgery, fraud and fraud, he managed with the help of his wife Helene and two other accomplices to deceive the most prestigious auction houses, the most important scholars and even the relatives of the forged artists themselves. We will see below the events that have influenced his profession and attitude to art, the interpersonal relationships that have facilitated his rise and the most important works, as well as the few currently discovered. Finally, we will deepen the legal case that saw him involved and tried for fraud in 2011 together with his accomplices and wife; his path after imprisonment and new experiments and artistic projects. The aim is to approach in a neutral and objective way the delicate issue of falsification in the artistic field, taking the Beltracchi case as a concrete example of investigation. In the final space we try to clarify the difference between copy and fake, in order to take an analytical position and not conditioned by the labels responsible for the figure of Wolfgang Beltracchi.
Oggetto d’indagine di questo elaborato è Wolfgang Beltracchi; artista tedesco divenuto famoso per essere la mente dietro al caso di falsificazione più eclatante del XXI secolo. Accusato di svariati reati di falsificazione, truffa e frode, è riuscito con l’aiuto della moglie Helene ed altri due complici a ingannare le più prestigiose case d’asta, gli studiosi più importanti e persino i parenti degli artisti falsificati. Vedremo a seguito gli eventi che ne hanno influenzato la professione e l’attitudine all’arte, i rapporti interpersonali che ne hanno facilitato l’ascesa e le opere più importanti, nonché le poche attualmente scoperte. Infine, approfondiremo il caso legale che lo ha visto coinvolto e processato per frode nel 2011 assieme ai complici e alla moglie; il suo percorso successivo alla reclusione e le nuove sperimentazioni e progetti artistici. Lo scopo è affrontare in modo neutrale ed obiettivo la delicata questione della falsificazione in ambito artistico, prendendo il caso Beltracchi come esempio concreto d’indagine. Nello spazio conclusivo si cerca di far chiarezza sulla differenza tra copia e falso, al fine di prendere una posizione analitica e non condizionata dalle etichette preposte in merito alla figura di Wolfgang Beltracchi.
