Da Padova a New York: Giovanni Umicini e la street photography

This thesis deals with the photographic genre called street photography and in particular the works of the Tuscan photographer Giovanni Umicini, recognized as one of the masters of this genre in Italy. The first chapter is dedicated to the historical evolution of street photography with an analysis of the work of the main street photographers from the nineteenth century to today. This is followed by a chapter on Giovanni Umicini’s life and most important works that led him to travel from Padua to New York. What unites these two cities so different from each other is the same aim that guides Umicini’s photographs: studying the behavior of human beings when they are alone on the street. The thesis ends with a chapter dedicated to the observations and analysis of some photographs by Giovanni Umicini, ranging from street photography to cinema.

Questa tesi ha per oggetto il genere fotografico street photography e in particolare i lavori del fotografo toscano Giovanni Umicini, riconosciuto come uno dei maestri di questo genere in Italia. Il primo capitolo è dedicato all’evoluzione storica del genere street photography con un’analisi dei lavori dei principali street photographers dall’Ottocento a oggi. Segue uno studio su Giovanni Umicini e i suoi lavori più importanti che l’hanno portato a viaggiare da Padova a New York. Ad unire queste due città così diverse tra loro è lo stesso principio che guida le fotografie di Umicini: studiare il comportamento dell’essere umano quando si trova da solo per strada. La tesi si conclude con un capitolo dedicato a delle osservazioni ed analisi di alcune fotografie di Giovanni Umicini, spaziando dalla street photography al cinema.
