Save the Game: approaches and challenges of archival preservation of video games Archival practice represents a crucial discipline for the collection and preservation of knowledge. Thanks to archives, academic or private, thousands of documents, works of art, cinema or music have been preserved from deterioration and passed on to future generations. The constant digitization of these finds allows their consultation overcoming geographical barriers that often negatively affected costs and duration of the research. The videogame is part of the goods that are increasingly in need of a complete and careful conservation. Representing a young medium, they face important and critical challenges. In Italy, moreover, they suffer from harmful stereotypes that undermine their legitimacy as cultural heritage. Gathering abundantly from the literary vein of game studies and accompanied by testimonies from experts in the field, this paper deals with the videogame object, analyzing its nature and legislative framework in Italy and in the rest of the world. It also explores the bodies that deal with their conservation, the methods used and the obstacles that arise for their activity. Ample space is dedicated to digital, a format that is constantly growing and that profoundly affects the preservation of video games themselves, provoking heated debates that are difficult to resolve, with both ethical and legal implications. The ultimate goal is to provide a general picture as complete as possible of videogame archival, focusing on its complexity and importance in the future.

Abstract
The ultimate goal is to provide a general picture as complete as possible of videogame archival, focusing on its complexity and importance in the future.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
