Background: Terminally ill patients experience negative symptoms during the last stage of life that can greatly reduce their life quality. Very often pharmacological techniques do not completely alleviate the symptoms of the end of life, it is therefore necessary to strengthen them with non-pharmacological methods such as complementary therapies that consider the person in his entirety. Therapeutic touch is a non-pharmacological and non-invasive nursing intervention designed by Dolores Krieger and Dora Kunz, in which the nurse's hands are used to grant positive energy to the patient, contributing to his overall well-being. The therapeutic touch is a means of support to the terminally ill and allows to give voice to his pain and all his needs. Objective: The general purpose of this thesis work is to evaluate, through a search within the scientific literature, whether a complementary therapy such as therapeutic touch can be effective in the management of terminal symptoms, especially in pain management. Methods: This problem has been addressed through a literature review, using databases such as Google Scholar, Pubmed and Cinhal, websites and scientific journals. The articles taken into consideration were selected through the following inclusion criteria: articles available online that address the topic of therapeutic touch or complementary care, English and Italian language of publication and research published in the last 10 years. Results: From the articles found it emerges that the Therapeutic Touch is not only useful in pain management, but also for other symptoms that can increase the perception of pain such as insomnia, anxiety and depression; it is also used by nurses to take care of the patient and to convey closeness. Conclusion: Therapeutic touch can therefore be an effective tool, together with standard drug treatment, to control symptoms and make the last stage of life less unpleasant. Despite this, the topic is still much debated, further specific studies on the subject are suggested with larger samples. Keywords: therapeutic touch, palliative care, symptom management
