Sport, Politica e Diritti Umani: un percorso storico di conflitti e trasformazioni

Through an exploration of socio-political-cultural contexts, this dissertation aims to understand how the relationship between sport and politics has influenced the theme of human rights over the centuries. The research will commence with an analysis of the role of sport, not only as a form of recreation but also as a predominantly political force, in ancient societies. It will then shift its focus to modern mega-sporting events and how they have played a crucial political and social role over the years, often trampling on human rights. Subsequently, the dynamics of nationalism and cultural identity and their implications in the world of sports, especially from the post-World War I era onwards, will be explored. This will include a spotlight on individuals who have been significant in the history of the relationship between sport and human rights. The dissertation will also examine cases where sports have facilitated the advancement of human rights, becoming a tool for social awareness and mobilization. It will delve into the role of sports in advancing and protecting the rights of minors, promoting social inclusion and the right to play, as well as issues related to diversity and inclusion in sporting activities. Finally, current and future challenges in safeguarding human rights in sports and prospects for its improvement will be examined. In conclusion, this dissertation will provide an overview of the interconnections between sport, politics, and human rights throughout history and their impact on global society.

Questo elaborato, attraverso un’esplorazione dei contesti socio-politici-culturali, ha l’obiettivo di comprendere come il legame tra sport e politica abbia influenzato il tema dei diritti umani nel corso dei secoli. La ricerca partirà da un’analisi del ruolo, non solo ludico ma anche e soprattutto politico, dello sport nelle società antiche, per poi concentrarsi sui mega-eventi sportivi moderni e su come negli anni abbiano avuto un ruolo politico e sociale determinante, spesso calpestando i diritti umani. Successivamente si esploreranno le dinamiche di nazionalismo e identità culturale e le implicazioni nel mondo dello sport, soprattutto dal primo dopoguerra in poi, dando spazio a personaggi che sono stati rilevanti nella storia dei rapporti tra sport e diritti umani. Verranno poi studiati i casi in cui lo sport ha favorito l’avanzamento dei diritti umani arrivando ad essere uno strumento di sensibilizzazione e mobilitazione sociale, il ruolo dello sport nell’avanzamento e nella protezione dei diritti dei minori con la promozione di inclusione sociale e diritto al gioco, e le questioni di diversità e inclusione nelle attività sportive. Infine verranno esaminate le sfide attuali e future nella tutela dei diritti umani nello sport e le prospettive per il miglioramento di quest’ultima. In conclusione, questa tesi offrirà una panoramica sulle interconnessioni tra sport. politica e diritti umani nel corso della storia e l’impatto sulla società globale.
