ABSTRACT Introduction: People with diabetes who wear dental implants have increased in recent decades, consequently it is important to be properly updated on maintenance therapy. Purpose of the article: The purpose of this paper is to summarize and describe the importance of maintenance therapy for diabetic patients wearing implant prosthetic restorations. Materials and methods: A literature review was conducted through the electronic databases of PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, scientific journals: dental hygiene journal, dentaljournal. The material was considered from 2013 to the present through searching the keywords: diabetes, dental hygienist, prevention, treatment, maintenance, dental implant. Results: In this paper, four studies appear to be in agreement that it is crucial to be able to establish effective communication with the patient by sensitizing him or her to maintaining good glycemic control and proper oral hygiene procedures; and that they should be adapted based on the individual characteristics of the patient and prostheses. Five different studies have found that patient adherence to maintenance therapy had greater outcomes in terms of rehabilitation survival. From the literature articles reviewed, it could be established that the maintenance of implant health status relies mainly on two factors: oral hygiene and professional decontamination. Conclusions: Maintenance therapy is based first on removing plaque and tartar deposits, motivating and teaching proper home oral hygiene maneuvers by promoting a healthy lifestyle.
