INTRODUCTION TO THE PROBLEM: The context of Compulsory Mental Health Treatments (CMHT) involves individuals suffering from severe mental, behavioral, or cognitive disorders, whose treatment is mandated to ensure their safety and that of the community. Despite the crucial role of nurses in the psychiatric care team, there is significant uncertainty regarding their specific responsibilities, and there is a lack of awareness about the CMHT procedure. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: The main objective of this paper is to clarify the responsibilities and competencies of nurses in Compulsory Mental Health Treatments (CMHT) through a literature review. Another aim is to define how CMHT is regulated and conducted. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For the review, PubMed and Google Scholar databases were consulted, using mesh terms combined in specific search strings, including articles accessible through the University of Padua's Proxy. The research questions identified, based on background literature, are as follows: What is the nurse's role during CMHT? What laws regulate the nurse's behavior during CMHT? How is CMHT conducted, and what are the key roles involved? RESULTS: The literature review highlights the crucial importance of clearly defining the involvement of nurses in CMHT to enhance professional training and promote more effective interprofessional collaboration among healthcare professionals. Additionally, a clear explanation of the CMHT process and the nursing role can contribute to ensuring optimal management of patients with severe mental disorders and improving the overall quality of care provided. CONCLUSIONS: This study analyzes the role of nurses in Compulsory Mental Health Treatments (CMHT) in the psychiatric field. It identifies the responsibilities of nurses during CMHT, including the safe transportation of patients, security management, and health education. The importance of limiting the use of restraint in accordance with the Deontological Code of Nursing Professions is emphasized. The study also examines the Basaglia Law (No. 180/78) and its impact on psychiatric practice in Italy, along with the CMHT procedure involving key actors such as the physician, the Mayor, and the Guardian Judge. It concludes that CMHT aims to balance humane care with respect for the rights and dignity of patients with mental disorders.
