Several studies have proven that social media has a powerful influence not only in people's lives but also in organisational leadership. The objective of this study is to analyse whether and how the leadership has experienced and/or is experiencing an overall change due to the introduction of social media in organisations. In particular, whether the differences between genders embrace these changes differently and whether they are a determining factor for the changes themselves. To answer the research questions, leaders participating in the study have completed an online questionnaire which was divided into four sections: biographical data, work environment, leadership and gender-related topics, and media influence. The thesis aims to highlight the main difficulties and the most important obstacles that a person, whether man or woman, encounters in their career to reach the position of leader, considering gender prejudices and stereotypes that are part of our society and the world of social media. The latter play a key role in the narrative and in shaping public opinion, influencing readers and presenting stereotypical interpretations that often put women under unfavourable light.
Diversi studi riconoscono ai social media una potente influenza, oltre che nella vita delle persone anche nella leadership organizzativa. L’obiettivo di questo studio è quello di analizzare se e come l’esercizio delle leadership abbia subito e/o stia subendo un cambiamento complessivo a causa dell’ingresso dei social media nelle organizzazioni lavorative. In particolare, se le differenze di genere accolgono questi cambiamenti in maniera diversa e se costituiscono un fattore determinante al cambiamento stesso. Per rispondere alle domande della ricerca, i leader partecipanti sono stati sottoposti a un questionario online suddiviso in quattro sezioni: dati biografici, contesto lavorativo, leadership e questione di genere e influenza dei media. L’elaborato si propone di rilevare le principali difficoltà e gli ostacoli più importanti che una persona, uomo o donna che sia, riscontri nella propria carriera per raggiungere la posizione di leader, considerando i pregiudizi e gli stereotipi basati sul genere che abitano la nostra società ed il modo dei social media. Questi ultimi giocano un ruolo chiave nella narrazione e nel plasmare l'opinione pubblica, influenzando i lettori e presentando interpretazioni stereotipate che spesso risultano sfavorevoli alle donne.
