Increasing awareness of the challenges of sustainable water management has placed the focus on the tourism sector as an important player in the consumption and modification of local water ecosystems. This thesis aims to examine the importance of calculating the water footprint in the context of tourism and to develop a practical tool to help tourist destinations and industry partners to assess and manage their impact on the use of water resources in a specific place at a given time. This thesis demonstrates how tourism can exert significant pressure on local water systems through the use of water for accommodation, food, transportation, and other travel-related activities. In addition, the environmental, social and economic implications of unsustainable use of water resources and not in tourism are explored. The tool proposed in this thesis provides a systematic methodology for measuring and evaluating the water footprint of tourism, enabling tourist destinations and industry partners to identify key sources of water consumption and opportunities for improvement. Moreover, the implementation of sustainable water management strategies can help mitigate the negative impacts of tourism on the water ecosystem and the local community, promoting greater environmental and social resilience. The thesis concludes by stressing the importance of promoting awareness among the various actors in the tourism sector about the responsible management of water resources. The adoption of a water footprint calculation tool could not only improve the environmental sustainability of tourist destinations, but also contribute to maintaining and improving the quality of the tourism experience, encouraging responsible and conscious tourism. Finally, research shows that sustainable management of water resources is crucial to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for the tourism sector and the communities dependent on it.

La crescente consapevolezza delle sfide legate alla gestione sostenibile delle risorse idriche ha posto l'attenzione sul settore del turismo come un importante attore nel consumo e nella modifica degli ecosistemi idrici locali. Questa tesi di laurea si propone di esaminare l'importanza del calcolo dell'impronta idrica nel contesto del turismo e di sviluppare uno strumento pratico per aiutare destinazioni turistiche e partner del settore a valutare e gestire il loro impatto sull'uso delle risorse idriche in un luogo specifico e in un momento determinato. Questa tesi dimostra come il turismo possa esercitare una pressione significativa sui sistemi idrici locali attraverso l'uso dell'acqua per alloggio, cibo, trasporti, e altre attività connesse al viaggio. Inoltre, vengono esplorate le implicazioni ambientali, sociali ed economiche di un uso non sostenibile delle risorse idriche e non nel turismo. Lo strumento proposto in questa tesi fornisce una metodologia sistematica per la misurazione e la valutazione dell'impronta idrica del turismo, consentendo alle destinazioni turistiche e ai partner del settore di identificare le fonti principali di consumo idrico e le relative opportunità di miglioramento. Inoltre, l'implementazione di strategie di gestione sostenibile dell'acqua può contribuire a mitigare gli impatti negativi del turismo sull'ecosistema idrico e sulla comunità locale, promuovendo una maggiore resilienza ambientale e sociale. La tesi conclude sottolineando l'importanza di promuovere la consapevolezza tra i vari attori del settore turistico riguardo alla gestione responsabile delle risorse idriche. L'adozione di uno strumento di calcolo dell'impronta idrica potrebbe non solo migliorare la sostenibilità ambientale delle destinazioni turistiche, ma anche contribuire a mantenere e migliorare la qualità dell'esperienza turistica, favorendo un turismo responsabile e consapevole. Infine, la ricerca dimostra che la gestione sostenibile delle risorse idriche è cruciale per garantire un futuro prospero e sostenibile per il settore turistico e per le comunità che ne dipendono.
