The thesis illustrates the legal status of women in post-unification Italy through the analysis of the civil codes of the Kingdom of Italy and the Austrian civil code. In the first chapter, the codes of the Kingdom of Italy were examined to study the legal position of the citizens of the Kingdom of Italy and in particular the submission of the wife to her husband was studied. In the second chapter, the Austrian civil code applied to Lombardy-Veneto was analyzed to make a comparison between Venetian women and Italian citizens. The third chapter is a brief overview of the evolution of women's legal status in Italy during the twentieth century. Overall, a general submission of women to men and of wives to husbands emerged, as well as limitations in civil rights and exclusion from public life.
