My dissertation is divided into three chapters, each of which explores important aspects of translation and its application within the context of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. The initial chapter addresses the central theme of translation, emphasising its inherent challenges and significance, especially in the context of literary works. It sheds light on the roles and responsibilities of translators, highlighting the importance of preserving the essence of the original text. The second chapter gives an introduction of the author, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and an analysis of his notable work, The Great Gatsby, taking into account the economic background and the notion of the American dream. This chapter further examines the challenges faced by translators in translating the novel into Italian, with a focus on retranslation. The final chapter examines the translation choices made by two Italian translators, Fernanda Pivano (1950) and Franca Cavagnoli (2023). It provides a comparative analysis, aiming to understand the differences and the similarities of these two approaches.
