"La donna-guerriero tra società e mitologia nordica: un'analisi di Lagertha in Vikings"

The present study aims to analyse the female figure in Germanic society with particular attention to the character of Lagertha from the “Gesta Danorum” by Saxo Grammaticus, as well as one of the main characters of the TV series “Vikings”. The aim of this study is to explore the role of women in Germanic society and to compare it with the imagery of the female figure provided in Norse mythology, from which will be taken into account especially the so-called “warrior women”, i.e. valkyries and “shield-maidens”, will be taken into account. In order to implement the present study, primary sources such as “Germania” by Tacitus and “De bello Gallico” by Julius Caesar will be considered with regard to Germanic society, and the “Ragnarr’s Saga” and Saxo Grammaticus’ “Gesta Danorum” for the mythological side. Moreover, through Gender Studies and more specifically Women’s Studies, it will be possible to analyse the feminine figure in Germanic society, therefore considering the feminist breakthrough that has taken place since the second half of the twentieth century and provides for the recognition of the female figure in different spheres of society, on par with the male figure. The analysis will focus mainly on the character of Lagertha, who will then be compared with the character of Áslaug, also present in the series. They are two women, who represent opposite images of the female figure in the Norse world, one the warrior par excellence and the other linked to magic. The characteristics of each will be analysed by comparing them with the primary sources taken into consideration.

Il presente studio si propone di analizzare la figura femminile nella società germanica con particolare attenzione al personaggio di Lagertha presente nelle “Gesta Danorum” di Saxo Grammaticus, nonché uno dei personaggi principali della serie tv “Vikings”. L’obiettivo di questo studio è quello di esplorare il ruolo della donna nella società germanica e compararlo con l’immaginario della figura femminile proposto nella mitologia nordica, dalla quale verranno prese in considerazione soprattutto le cosiddette “donne-guerriero”, quindi valchirie e “shield-maidens”. Per poter attuare il presente studio saranno considerate fonti primarie quali la “Germania” di Tacito e il “De bello Gallico” di Giulio Cesare per quanto riguarda la società germanica, la “Saga di Ragnarr” e le “Gesta Danorum” di Saxo Grammaticus per il lato mitologico. Inoltre, attraverso i “Gender Studies” e più precisamente gli “Women’s Studies”, sarà possibile analizzare la figura della donna nella società germanica, considerando quindi la svolta femminista che ha preso piede dalla seconda metà del novecento e prevede il riconoscimento della figura femminile nei diversi ambiti della società, al pari della figura maschile. L’analisi verterà principalmente sul personaggio di Lagertha, la quale verrà successivamente confrontata con il personaggio di Áslaug, anch’essa presente nella serie. Due donne che rappresentano immagini opposte della figura femminile nel mondo nordico, una la guerriera per eccellenza e l’altra più legata alla magia. Si analizzeranno le caratteristiche di ciascuna comparandole con le fonti primarie prese in considerazione.
