In this thesis project, a little-known terrestrial leech, Haemopis elegans Moquin-Tandon, 1846 (Hirudinea: Haemopidae), is characterized and reported for the first time in the Italian fauna. The work was carried out based on material obtained through field sampling and data collected through citizen science activities. To achieve a taxonomic diagnosis of the species, a morphological and molecular study (using DNA barcoding) was conducted on the collected specimens. Additionally, unprecedented observations on the ecology of the species are discussed, which was only previously known in Central Europe, north of the Alpine arc, and the Balkan Peninsula.
