Studio preliminare della personalità nei maschi di Gromphadorhina portentosa

In this thesis project we wanted to verifiy the presence of personality traits in the Madagascar hissing cockroach, Gromphadorhina portentosa. The study was focused on adult male individuals that were tested by using a standard exploration set up (open field), from which estimates of boldness and exploration were obtained for each individual. The test was repeated four times over a short period of time, to obtain accurate estimates of repeatability and personality. Physical characteristics of individuals were also measured (size and weight) to explore the possible correlation with their behavior. Through this project we therefore attempted to shed some light on certaind behavioral aspects of this species that are still rarely studied.

In questo progetto di tesi si è voluta verificare la presenza di tratti della personalità nella blatta fischiante del Madagascar, Gromphadorhina portentosa. Lo studio si è concentrato su individui maschi adulti che sono stati testati utilizzando un set up standard per l’esplorazione (open field), da cui si sono ottenuti stime di boldness e esplorazione per ogni individuo. Il test è stato ripetuto quattro volte in un ristretto arco di tempo per ottenere stime di ripetibilità e personalità accurate. Si sono inoltre misurate le caratteristiche fisiche degli individui (dimensioni e peso) per esplorare una possibile correlazione con il loro comportamento. Con questo progetto si è cercato perciò di far luce su alcuni aspetti comportamentali ancora poco studiati, di questa specie.
