La Materia del deseo is a work written by Edmundo Pan Soldán, published in 2001 and it tells the story of a young university professor who returns to his hometown Río Fugitivo to escape from the relationship with his student and to seek news of his father who was murdered in an ambush. It is therefore fundamental for the protagonist the persuit of his own identity as well as for Hispanic-American culture. For this reason, it will be necessary to start from the key novel of magical realism published in 1967 by Gabriel García Márquez, Cien años de soledad, set in Macondo and which tells the story of seven generations of the founding family, the Buendías. It will then be followed by Alberto Fuguet's 1996 tale of stories, Mcondo, born from the combination of the Mcdonald's brand and Márquez's fictional town, contextualized in urban civilization following the advent of globalization. In fact, it will be the connection between Macondo and the Materia del deseo to try to build a literary analysis of Latin American identity.
