This work is focused on the analysis of William Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth, the Lady of Inverness Castle. I have divided my thesis into three chapter: the first one focuses on the historical background, mainly the position of women in early modern England; the second chapter focuses on patriarchal dominance and I will discuss how manhood is a recurrent theme in the play. Finally, the third chapter delves into the character of Lady Macbeth, examinig how guilt of conscience and remorse lead her to madness.
