The thesis focuses on the evolution of English and in particular on American English and its dialect variations. By analyzing the linguistic contacts and phonological changes that have occurred throughout history in American English, the thesis traces the origins and ramifications of the American variation of English. The first chapter shows the first linguistic contacts between the British colonists who landed in America and the native populations. Subsequently, the topic of external and internal migrations to the United States and the importance they had in the spread of English in America and, in particular, on the East Coast, is addressed. On the other hand, in the second chapter the dialect of American English spoken by the Black population is studied: African-American English. In addition to explaining its phonological and linguistic characteristics, its African origins are also widely explored, together with the display of the theories and speculations that have been formulated about it. Finally, the third chapter takes the reader back to the Motherland of the English language, the United Kingdom. A comparative study is provided between the phonological characteristics seen in the previous chapters and those of British English, always taking into account the dialect varieties. The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate how linguistic contacts and phenomena of change, which had Great Britain as their main starting point, have strongly influenced the birth of a language and its dialects.
