Da orfane a virtuose: la figura della 'figlia di coro' negli Ospedali veneziani del Settecento

In this thesis I am going to present in detail the figure of the "figlia di coro" in the Venetian Hospitals of the 1700s. The latter were important institutions in the city that provided opportunities for those from the lowest stratum of society, such as orphans or illegitimate children, to emerge and have a career that would allow them to survive. Given the almost no contribution from the Doge toward these institutions, music education was crucial for the maintenance of the structures. Thus, choirs of "figlie", orphans gifted in singing, were created and tasked with performing masses and other liturgical celebrations. The choirs were so successful that the daughters had the honor of receiving the title of virtuosos and being acclaimed by Venetian audiences and beyond.

In questa tesi si andrà a presentare in dettaglio la figura della “figlia di coro” negli Ospedali veneziani del 1700. Questi ultimi erano delle istituzioni importanti della città che davano l’opportunità a coloro che provenivano dallo strato più basso della società, come orfani o figli illegittimi, di emergere ed avere una carriera che permettesse loro di sopravvivere. Visto il quasi nullo contributo da parte del Doge verso queste istituzioni, l’educazione musicale fu fondamentale per il mantenimento delle strutture. Si vennero a creare così cori di “figlie”, ovvero orfane dotate nel canto, che avevano il compito di eseguire messe e altre celebrazioni liturgiche. I cori ebbero un tale successo che le figlie ebbero l’onore di ricevere il titolo di virtuose ed essere acclamate dal pubblico veneziano e non solo.
