Sila Piccola: un'analisi antropologica sull'abbandono e la nostalgia nei paesi delle aree interne della Calabria centrale

More and more frequent are the cases of inland Calabrian villages torn apart by abandonment, now reduced to ruins bearing the symbolic weight of absence and inevitably, nostalgia (as suggested by the etymology of the word itself: from the Greek "nostos," return home, and "algos," pain). In the specific context of the villages in Sila Piccola, whether one has inhabited them or not, everyone has a direct or indirect experience with these places. What happens to these places, why are they abandoned, and what are the consequences that this abandonment brings to the individual's everyday anthropological experience? How does their relationship with these places change, for example, in the perception of not belonging and in the attempt to recreate an environment that was once familiar elsewhere? What happens, then, when one returns to the abandoned places, what is their bond with that place now? Referring to anthropological literature focused on the issue of Calabrian emigration and the abandonment of places, in this thesis, I will attempt to answer some of these questions. The presence of a place that was once inhabited always carries with it the debris of that existence. We are faced with a bleeding past that imposes itself in a tyrannical present, which seeks to sever every tie with time, creating a constant movement. In these places, however, the movement halts, and the present is suspended, while we gaze upon the past.

Sempre di più e sempre più frequenti sono i casi di paesi dell’entroterra calabrese dilaniati dall’abbandono, diventati ormai rovine che portano con sé il peso simbolico della mancanza e, inevitabilmente, della nostalgia (come suggerisce l’etimologia stessa della parola: dal greco “nostos”, ritorno a casa, e“algos”, dolore). Nel quadro particolare dei paesi della Sila Piccola, che li si abbia abitati o meno, ognuno ha un’esperienza, diretta o indiretta con questi luoghi. Cosa avviene a quei luoghi, perché li si abbandona e quali sono le conseguenze che questo abbandono apporta nel logos antropologico quotidiano dell’individuo? Come cambia il suo rapporto con i luoghi, per esempio nella percezione di non appartenenza e nel tentativo di ricreare un ambiente che gli era familiare altrove? Cosa avviene, poi, quando torna nei luoghi abbandonati, qual è il suo rapporto con quel luogo adesso? Facendo riferimento a una letteratura antropologica focalizzatasi sulla questione dell’emigrazione calabrese e dell’abbandono dei luoghi, in questa tesi proverò a rispondere ad alcune di queste domande. La presenza di un posto che era stato abitato un tempo porta sempre con sé le macerie di quell’esistenza. Ci si trova di fronte a un passato sanguinante che si impone in un presente tirannico, il quale cerca di recidere ogni legame con il tempo, creando un movimento costante. In questi luoghi, invece, il movimento si arresta e il presente è come sospeso, mentre ci si affaccia sul passato.
