This dissertation explores some of the most important phases in the life of Belarusian artist Léon Bakst, best known for being one of the most important members of the famous Ballets Russes, which was created and directed by Sergei Djagilev. The Ballets Russes were a cultural phenomenon that allowed Russian folklore to be known in the West, and Bakst contributed to the triumph of the company's productions with his costumes and sets. For this reason, this dissertation focuses on the golden age of the Ballets Russes, on the evolution of the artist's style and particularly on his influence on the art and fashion of that time. This will be followed by an analysis of one of the company's most famous works: The Sleeping Princess.
Questa tesi esplora alcune delle fasi più importanti della vita dell’artista bielorusso Léon Bakst, conosciuto soprattutto per essere stato un pilastro della famosa compagnia dei Balletti Russi, creata e diretta da Sergej Djagilev. I Balletti Russi furono un fenomeno culturale che permise al folklore russo di essere conosciuto anche in Occidente e Bakst grazie ai suoi costumi e alle sue scenografie contribuì a rendere le opere della compagnia un trionfo. Per questo motivo questa tesi si focalizza sul periodo d’oro dei Balletti, sull’evoluzione dello stile dell’artista e soprattutto sull’influenza di quest’ultimo nell’arte e nella moda coevi. Seguirà poi l’analisi di una delle opere più famose della compagnia: The Sleeping Princess.
