L'empowerment nella promozione dello sviluppo in persone con disabilità intellettiva

Through this paper, we will analyze the concepts of empowerment and disability, particularly intellectual disability; first separately in order to delve into the history and characteristics of the two concepts, and then we will try to understand the connection there may be between the two topics, making use of scientific bibliographies from recent years as the construct of empowerment has grown in importance just since the new millennium. Finally, we will try to understand how all the strategies and methods that have emerged from the research can be applied to the profession of the educator and how he or she can promote empowerment in people with intellectual disabilities. This research can be an important food for thought of an underestimated issue especially because of the complexity of empowerment but not because of that, we should back off from trying to include it as a goal of educational, political or social structures to raise the person with disabilities and not only.

Attraverso questo elaborato analizzeremo i concetti di empowerment e disabilità, in particolare quella intellettiva; prima in maniera separata per approfondire la storia e le caratteristiche dei due concetti e poi cercheremo di capire il legame che vi può essere tra i due argomenti, avvalendoci di bibliografie scientifiche degli ultimi anni in quanto il costrutto dell’empowerment è cresciuto di importanza proprio a partire dal nuovo millennio. Infine, cercheremo di comprendere come tutte le strategie e i metodi emersi dalla ricerca possono essere applicati alla professione dell’educatore e come egli può promuovere l’empowerment nelle persone con disabilità intellettiva. Questa ricerca può essere un importante spunto di riflessione di una tematica sottovalutata soprattutto per la complessità dell’empowerment ma non per questo, bisogna tirarsi indietro dal tentare di inserirlo come obiettivo di strutture scolastiche, politiche o sociali per far crescere la persona con disabilità e non solo.
