This thesis will report on the experience of cultural differences in the workplace of expats living and working in the Ostrava Region, in the Czech Republic. The main aim is to investigate the link between cross-cultural management and the strategic development of Ostrava, which is considered an innovative city. Local players and institution work towards talent attraction and retention, ultimately creating an expat-friendly environment. A vibrant expat community and an increasingly international working environment might mean that expats working in the Moravian-Silesian Region experience local business culture differently. The research question is then: “What is the perception of cross-cultural differences in the workplace of expatriates living in the expat-friendly Ostrava region?”. This question will be answered by surveying expats in the Ostrava Region with a questionnaire, which has been constructed according to relevant intercultural communication theories.
