The study focuses on the history of animal ethics in modern and contemporary philosophy and analyzes the philosophical motivations behind the vegetarian choice. The first chapter deals with the culture of meat, whose roots can be identified in domestication, through the analysis of the current conditions of nonhuman animals and the definition of carnism. The second chapter traces the evolution of ethics towards animals in the history of modern philosophy, from Descartes’ machine animal to Jeremy Bentham’s benevolence and the influence of the Darwinian hypothesis on the extension of ethics. Particular attention is given to the approach of Arthur Schopenhauer, who bases his morality on the concept of compassion. In the third chapter the analysis moves towards the 20th century, examining the emergence of animal ethics as a social movement. The position of Peter Singer is analyzed, with his principle of equal consideration of interests, through the definition of the concept of speciesism and the promotion of vegetarian choice. Tom Regan’s thought analysis closes the chapter, providing further perspectives on radical antispeciesism. Through this critical and historical analysis, the thesis aims to outline the path of the ethical question of the relationship between humans and animals and to contribute to the understanding of the philosophical roots underlying the vegetarian choice.

Abstract
Through this critical and historical analysis, the thesis aims to outline the path of the ethical question of the relationship between humans and animals and to contribute to the understanding of the philosophical roots underlying the vegetarian choice.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
