Nowadays the global economy is going through a phase of radical changes. We have now entered the fourth industrial revolution, characterized by the fusion between the virtual world and the real world thanks to the integration of digital technologies in companies. Innovation is an indispensable process to guarantee the survival of businesses and to make them competitive in the reference markets, in which technologies, tools, processes and the needs of consumers and entrepreneurs change. In this regard, the Digital Twin presents itself as one of the most innovative technologies for improving the automation and intelligence of industrial plants. This thesis conducts a literature review analyzing all the characteristics of the Digital Twin, in order to underline its major usefulness in industrial production. The basic characteristics, the technologies that compose it, the practical uses in the production and service phases, the limitations and finally the possible developments for the future are illustrated. The final objective is therefore to provide a complete overview of this recent technology to understand why and how convenient its use is in industrial environments.
Al giorno d’oggi l’economia globale sta attraversando una fase di radicali cambiamenti. Siamo ormai entrati nella quarta rivoluzione industriale, caratterizzata dalla fusione tra mondo virtuale e mondo reale grazie all’integrazione delle tecnologie digitali nelle aziende. L’innovazione è un processo indispensabile per garantire la sopravvivenza delle imprese e per renderle competitive nei mercati di riferimento, nei quali mutano le tecnologie, gli strumenti, i processi e le esigenze di consumatori e imprenditori. A tal proposito il Digital Twin si propone come una tra le tecnologie più innovative per il miglioramento dell’automazione e dell’intelligenza degli impianti industriali. Questa tesi conduce una revisione della letteratura analizzando tutte le caratteristiche del Digital Twin, al fine di sottolinearne le maggiori utilità nella produzione industriale. Vengono illustrate le caratteristiche base, le tecnologie che lo compongono, gli utilizzi pratici nelle fasi di produzione e servizio, le limitazioni ed infine i possibili sviluppi per il futuro. L’obbiettivo finale è quindi fornire una panoramica completa di questa recente tecnologia per comprendere perché e quanto è conveniente il suo impiego nelle realtà industriali.
