This thesis aims to examine gender inequality in the media, focusing on the Italian context. Initially, the dynamics of differential representation and treatment of genders within the media are explored, highlighting the challenges and stereotypes perpetuated. Subsequently, the focus shifts to the role of women in Italian politics, analyzing the presence, rise and challenges that women face in pursuing political careers. Particular emphasis is placed on media discrimination of women taking on senior roles in politics, examining how the press and other media contribute to the creation and maintenance of harmful stereotypes. In the Italian context, the unique challenges and peculiarities of the media treatment of women in politics are highlighted. The final part of the thesis focuses on the figure of Giorgia Meloni, the first woman to hold the position of Prime Minister in the history of the Italian Republic. Through an in-depth analysis, we explore the media dynamics surrounding her leadership, evaluating how her mandate influences and changes the landscape of female representation in Italian politics. The objective is to offer a critical and reflective overview of the challenges and opportunities that women in important political positions face in the Italian media context, with a particular focus on the figure of Giorgia Meloni.

Abstract

This thesis aims to examine gender inequality in the media, focusing on the Italian context.
