The thesis is a linguistic analysis of the poem “The Battle of Maldon”, a poetic account of a war event that occurred in 991 A.D. near Maldon in Essex (UK). To gain an overview, the historical period of the battle is described in order to understand the use and choice of words being analysed. In fact, a lexical survey of the semantic sphere of warfare is carried out, which will result in the etymological analysis of each word considering its Germanic and, backwards, Indo-European roots. The secondary objective is to verify the use of such words in other Germanic languages such as Old High German and Old Irish and to check whether their meaning has changed or remained unchanged.

Abstract
The thesis is a linguistic analysis of the poem “The Battle of Maldon”, a poetic account of a war event that occurred in 991 A.D. near Maldon in Essex (UK). To gain an overview, the historical period of the battle is described in order to understand the use and choice of words being analysed. In fact, a lexical survey of the semantic sphere of warfare is carried out, which will result in the etymological analysis of each word considering its Germanic and, backwards, Indo-European roots. The secondary objective is to verify the use of such words in other Germanic languages such as Old High German and Old Irish and to check whether their meaning has changed or remained unchanged.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
