The Fellowship of the Ring: A comparison of three Italian translations with the original text

The recent release in 2019 of the new Italian translation of The Lord of the Rings seems to resemble more the original text, compared to the first one proposed in the 1970s and subsequently revisited in the 2000s, and became the most famous and read in our country. The aim of this research is to show, through extracts from the first book The Fellowship of the Ring, how the various translations differ from each other in multiple linguistic aspects, and how the Italian translation of the text examined has changed over the years, considering the period in which it was conducted, and the preferences and knowledge of the translators. The research is based on theoretical studies on translation conducted by several scholars such as Lawrence Venuti and Mona Baker, and subsequently on direct consultation of the text The Fellowship of the Ring. The research method involves the comparison between the original text and the Italian translations, taking into account the preferences of the average readers found on dedicated forums. The Italian translations examined are different from each other and from the original text considering the historical periods in which they were conducted, and considering the different translation methodologies applied by the translators.
