BACKGROUND: Despite the effectiveness of medications and traditional therapies, treating psychiatric disorders remains a complex challenge. Music therapy emerges as an intriguing therapeutic choice involving the use of music in a professional setting to enhance the lives and health of individuals, engaging them physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Despite the growing interest in complementary therapies obs““erved in recent years, supported by evidence of their effectiveness, the incorporation and utilization of these therapies are not yet established in the standard protocols of Italian healthcare facilities. Music therapy, therefore, presents itself as a promising therapeutic option but requires further research for a better understanding of its effectiveness, mechanisms of action, and its role in nursing care. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To examine the beneficial effects of music therapy applied to various psychiatric pathologies, such as PTSD, depression, schizophrenia, and anxiety, and to explore the potential use of music therapy as a nursing care strategy and intervention for managing patients with psychiatric disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A literature search and review were conducted for the elaboration of this paper. Relevant articles were retrieved through consultation of Databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, CINAHL, Cochrane Library), and online pages. The research question was formulated using the PIO (Patient-Intervention-Outcome) method. RESULTS: Evidence demonstrates that music therapy offers numerous benefits both emotionally and cognitively, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life and emotional well-being of patients with psychiatric disorders, thus facilitating the recovery process. This therapeutic tool has proven effective both as a complement to ordinary therapies and as an alternative therapeutic tool. Additionally, the possibility of implementing music therapy by healthcare personnel, including nurses, through a passive approach such as that characterizing receptive music therapy, has been highlighted. DISCUSSION and CONCLUSION: Music therapy emerges as a valuable therapeutic resource deserving of greater consideration. Introducing this form of therapy into standard nursing care would add significant professional value, enhancing the overall care experience for patients with psychiatric disorders. This non-pharmacological therapeutic approach expands the available treatment options, offering additional therapeutic benefits and promoting the holistic well-being of patients.
