This thesis has as main topic of discussion Kathryn Stockett’s novel The Help. The first chapter concerns the author, who decided to write a story of discrimination, of which she is not part of. It starts with the concept of cultural appropriation, it reconstructs the history of cultural appropriation with other literary examples, when it began and what are different lines of thought about cultural appropriation in literature. The second chapter is about the story, and it focuses on the figure of the white saviour in the story. The third chapter presents a specific analysis of three main elements of this novel: the context, the characters, and the use of non-standard English in the novel, when a black character is speaking. This work tries to understand whether or not Kathryn Stockett gave a reliable representation and how her white privilege led her to make some mistake.
