Grammaticalizzazione e prestito: i processi che li caratterizzano e cosa differenzia i due fenomeni linguistici

The thesis aims to thoroughly examine two important linguistic phenomena: grammaticalization and linguistic borrowing. The first chapter will outline the concept of grammaticalization, exploring its key processes and providing concrete examples. The second chapter will focus on linguistic borrowing, with particular attention to the dynamic between English as the "target language" and French as the "donor language," given their historical interactions and my academic background. In the third chapter, the two phenomena will be compared, with the goal of analyzing differences and potential overlaps. Through a multidisciplinary approach integrating grammatical, phonetic, semantic, and syntactic aspects, as well as contributions from historical linguistics and sociolinguistics, the thesis will explore various perspectives and provide new understandings of how grammaticalization and linguistic borrowing may interact and mutually influence each other. Examples and case studies will be provided to illustrate the discussed concepts, and the analysis will also focus on the different temporal scales on which these two phenomena operate.

La tesi si propone di esaminare in modo approfondito due importanti fenomeni linguistici: la grammaticalizzazione e i prestiti linguistici. Nel primo capitolo, verrà delineato il concetto di grammaticalizzazione, esplorando i suoi processi chiave e fornendo esempi concreti. Il secondo capitolo si concentrerà sui prestiti linguistici, con particolare attenzione alla dinamica tra la lingua inglese come "target language" e il francese come "donor language", date le loro interazioni storiche e la mia formazione accademica. Nel terzo capitolo, i due fenomeni saranno confrontati, con l'obiettivo di analizzare le differenze e le possibili sovrapposizioni. Attraverso un approccio multidisciplinare che integra aspetti grammaticali, fonetici, semantici, sintattici, nonché contributi dalla linguistica storica e dalla sociolinguistica, la tesi esplorerà varie prospettive e fornirà nuove comprensioni su come la grammaticalizzazione e i prestiti linguistici possano interagire e influenzarsi reciprocamente. Sono previsti esempi e casi di studio per illustrare i concetti discussi, e l'analisi si concentrerà anche sulla diversa scala temporale su cui agiscono questi due fenomeni.
